What is the IPCA?

The IPCA is Brazil's official inflation index. IBGE calculates it every month from the prices paid by families earning 1 to 40 minimum wages in the main metropolitan areas, and the National Monetary Council sets the inflation target on it. It is also the index of the Tesouro IPCA+ bond: its 12-month figure is what a real return is measured against.
